Course Description

This course provides a forum for discussion of basic law and ethical issues related to medical practice and patient rights. Topics covered in this course include jurisprudence and the classification of law, medical professional liability and negligence, as well as the physician licensure and registration process. The history of ethics in medicine and other ethical issues surrounding the medical field will be explored as well as HIPAA standards, practices and provisions. Included will be a review of the Code of Ethics and Creed of the AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants) which sets forth principles of ethical and moral conduct as they relate to the medical profession and the particular practice of medical assisting. Scope of practice for the Medical Assistant will be covered in depth. Also included will be the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) and AHIMA (American Health Information & Management Association) Code of Ethics that reflect the coding profession’s core values and establishes a set of ethical principles to be used to guide decision-making and actions. Finally, the AHDI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity) Code of Ethics will be touched upon for practical application and interpretation of case studies.
