English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Institute of American English Studies provides ESL courses to meet the needs of non-native speakers of English. The program follows the semester schedule of SCCC and features fifteen week sessions, small group instruction, and individualized attention.
ESL students are welcome to participate in the Learning Center Writing Labs.

Upon entry you will receive a personal interview to discuss your educational and career goals, and a language assessment to assure that you are placed in the proper level.

We offer academic ESL courses at the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels:

Grammar · Writing · Reading & Vocabulary · Conversation
TOEFL Preparation (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

American Culture
Life Skills English

Vocabulary, grammar, and speaking skills are developed with an emphasis on practical topics needed for daily living in the United States.

American Culture is held at the SCCC Campus, Blessed Kateri Church in Sparta,
and at el Refugio, located in Christ's Church in Newton.
