Sussex County Community College offers small-group, self-paced instruction in basic writing, reading and math skills (Adult Basic Education/ABE), as well as additional components in science, social studies and literature for students preparing for the NJ State General Education Development (GED) exam. The program is primarily for adults who have not completed high school. Day and evening sessions are available on campus. The program is offered through funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and is free to participants.
Who is eligible?
If you are at least 16 years of age, you can enter the program with consent from a parent or guardian. A separate class is held for 16 and 17 year old students on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Minors must first obtain a “Certificate of Consent to Participate” form signed by a parent or guardian. 16 to 21 year old students must also provide a completed “Certification of Non-Enrollment in School” form from their high school. Both forms are available through our program.
Prospective students are welcome to enroll in the ABE/GED Program once they have made an appointment to take the program enrollment test. This test is called a TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) and is given on selected Tuesday afternoons. The number to call to register for the TABE is (973) 300-2158.
How long will it take?
Learning needs will vary, depending on each student’s level of mastery in each of the basic skills areas. Instruction is, therefore, individualized. You set the pace through regular attendance and focus on your curriculum of study as determined by our instructors based upon your entering skill levels.
Where can I take the GED Exam?
The General Educational Development (GED) exam is administered each month at the college’s testing center on campus. Tests are offered on Saturdays to accommodate participants. Any New Jersey resident, 18 years or older who does not have a high school diploma is eligible to take the exam. Individuals who are 16 and 17 years old are only be eligible to register to take the GED Exam at the college’s testing center by first enrolling and completing four official GED practice tests in the ABE/GED Study Program. Please contact Kathyrn Mikita at (973) 300-2186 for an appointment to register for the GED Exam.
