Language Arts/Literacy and Math Education Requirement for Elementary and Middle School First Year Teachers
New Jersey Department of Education regulations require that alternate route elementary and middle school first year teachers take an additional 90 hours of instruction, 45 hours in language arts/literacy education and 45 hours in math education.
This requirement does not apply to elementary and middle school teachers who hold a subject area CE in the subject they are teaching.
Literacy Education 45-hour course (Fall semester)
Students will examine and apply best practices that shape elementary and middle school literacy development and instruction. Planning curriculum, designing physical environments, and organizing and evaluating instruction will be addressed using methods and materials based on educational research and theory. Designed for new teachers, the course will provide classroom support and networking and practical application of classroom issues in literacy. Areas such as balanced literacy, assessment, phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency will be addressed.

Math Education 45-hour course (Spring semester)
Learn classroom applications of the following ideas: distinction between numbers and numeral structure in arithmetic; the use of set ideas in understanding the fundamental operations in arithmetic; and a modern approach to the solution of verbal problems, open sentences, number families, patterns in arithmetic, geometry, and informal proofs. Designed for new teachers, the course will provide classroom support and networking and practical application of classroom issues in math.
