Admission Requirements

Summer 2011 NPTNJ Stage I

Days: Monday and Wednesday
Dates: 6/27/11 – 8/10/11 (No Class 7/4/11)
Time: 6:00 pm – 9:45 pm
Cost: Non-Credit – $1,300 Credit – $2,943

To register for Stage I students must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Bachelor or higher degree
  2. 2.75 minimum GPA in highest degree
  3. Passing Praxis II score
  4. Completion of Introduction to Teaching 24-Hour Pre-Service Course
  5. Certificate of Eligibility (CE)

Course Description:
Stage I is a 60-hour course introducing students to the world of teaching in the K-12 classroom. Fifteen of the 60 hours are spent observing in a K-12 classroom. A teaching job is not required for Stage I enrollment and registrants may continue current employment but must arrange time off to fulfill the 15 hours of observation.

Students must complete Stage I with a grade of B to be eligible for Stage II.

Choose From Two Options

Graduate credit option: New Jersey City University (NJCU) offers 15 graduate credits applicable toward numerous NJCU education masters degrees. Stage I earns 4 credits and Stage II earns 11 credits. Graduate credit enrollees will receive a packet of information from NJCU regarding the continuation of graduate studies and the choice of majors.

EDU 500 Classroom Management (1 Credit)
EDU 645 Curriculum and Methods (3 Credits)

Noncredit option: Offers a certificate
The course requirements and workload are identical for both options. Both equally fulfill the Department of Education (DOE) requirements for certification. Most students feel that since both options require identical work it is advantageous to select the graduate credit option.
