WebCT 4.1.x Instructions & FAQ's

WebCT Logo

1. You may not be able to access your online course(s) for Fall & Spring until the Saturday after the semester starts at the latest. Winter & Summer courses may not be able to be accessed until the second day of the semester. If you don't see your course(s) at the start of the semester keep checking back daily. If you don't see your course after the last possible start date please contact the faculty secretary at 973-300-2165 to contact the instructor.

To log on to WebCT at that time:

  1. Log on to the WebCT log-in site > http://webct.sussex.edu:8900/
  2. The Username is your SCCC Student ID #
  3. The Password is: sussex (Please change your password once logged-in.)
  4. Click on the course name(s) that appear.
  5. Send your instructor an e-mail via WebCT to let him/her know you have accessed the course.

2. If you have difficulty accessing the course(s) you are enrolled in, attempt the following in the order they appear:

  1. Remember you may have to wait until the first Saturday for Fall & Spring or second day for Winterim or Summer semesters. If you don't see your course(s) at the start of the semester keep checking back daily. If you don't see your course after the last start day possible please contact the faculty secretary at 973-300-2165 to contact the instructor.
  2. Access the WebCT help page > http://www.webct.com/tuneup
  3. If configuring your browser doesn't help and you are getting a "Page not found or Not authorized to view this page" message or are getting redirected to another site when loging in try this link: http://webct.sussex.edu:8900/webct/ticket/ticketLogin?action=print_login&request_uri=/webct/homearea/homearea
  4. If this does not help you can e-mail your instructor via their SCCC address with detailed information of what is or is not happening. Be sure to put your course name in the subject box. (Note: instructors may not be available to respond to your e-mails until the first day of the semester.)
  5. Occasionally we have had problems with Earthlink DSL service making its way to the SCCC campus. We have determined that when the anomaly happens we can make the following changes to the network connection on the local PC having the problem and the problem clears up.
    1. Go into Control Panel
    2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon
    3. Hi-lite Local Area Connection (do not double-click on it, just hi-lite it)
    4. Right click on your mouse and select "Properties" from the menu. This will open up a Local Area Connections properties page
    5. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and hi-lite it.
    6. Click on the "Properties" button
    7. Near the bottom of the properties page you may see "Obtain DNS server address automatically" selected.
    8. Click on the radio button next to "Use the following DNS server addresses" This will then allow you to put entries in the Preferred and Alternate DNS server boxes.
    9. Do the following...
      Preferred DNS server: 204.117.214.10
      Alternate DNS server: 199.2.252.10
    10. After doing this press OK and then try accessing our site again.
  6. If you require further assistance you can e-mail the Webmaster at jkelly@sussex.edu.

Frequently asked questions regarding on-line and hybrid courses…

1. How do I know if an on-line or hybrid course is right for me?

  1. Ask a counselor or your advisor what is involved in an on-line course. Honestly reflect on your own level of self-motivation and self-discipline. Determine your own ability to engage in self-directed reading other assignments.
  2. Listed below are two websites that may also help you in determining if an online course is right for you.
    http://www.cod.edu/dept/CIL/CIL_Surv.htm
    http://www.onlinelearning.net/OLE/holwselfassess.html

Please note - These are external links and SCCC cannot be responsible for their availability.

2. Should I take more than one on-line or hybrid course per semester?

The answer to this question depends on your initial assessment of your self-motivation, as well as the time you have to devote to each course. On-line classes are not designed to take up less time than an in-class course. They are designed to give you the flexibility to “attend” class when it is more convenient for you.

3. What is the difference between an on-line course and a hybrid course?

Typically, on-line courses do not have an in-class component, although some instructors may require students to be on campus for tests or other assignments. A hybrid course always has an in-class, on-campus component that students are required to attend.

4. Can I access my course in WebCT before the first day of the semester?

No.

5. How do I access WebCT?

Log on to the WebCT log-in site > http://webct.sussex.edu:8900/

6. What is my user name and password?

User Name: Your student ID number
Password: sussex (until you change it.)
Please change your password after login.

7. What if I try to access WebCT and I can’t get it to come up on my screen?

  1. The problem may be that your browser needs to be configured for the program. Go to the WebCT tuneup page http://www.webct.com/tuneup to configure your browser.

8. What if I log in to WebCT but I don’t see the course I registered for?

Contact the instructor for the course or leave a message for her/him with the faculty secretary at 973-300-2165.

9. How do I contact my instructor?

Leave a message for your instructor with the faculty secretary at 973-300-2165, or log on to the SCCC home page at www.sussex.edu and click on the link for faculty/staff to find her/his office number and e-mail address.
