The Sussex County Skylanders softball team was able to take both games against the Camden Cougars on Friday’s game April 22 at home.
In the middle of the sixth, the score was Cougars 1, Skylanders 0. With Kelli Costa safe on second and Leslie Ferrari on first Melissa Kanouse knocked out a double scoring Costa but Ferrari was tagged out at home. Kanouse was unable to score before the inning was over. Score was now tied at 1 apiece.
The Sussex Skylanders were able to hold the Camden Cougars in the seventh. With Jennifer Fliegel safe on first, Mary Hocking sacrificed a bunt so Fliegel could advance to second. Then Fliegel stole to third. It looked like it could be close with the runner on third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Kayla Mango cracked one in left field to bring in the winning run for the first game. Sussex won 2, Cougars 1.
In game two Camden started off with Christine Schaeffer knocking out a double and then later scoring to lead 1-0 in the middle of the inning. Sussex came back with Brook Goldsberry scoring and then Brittany Duran getting a double on an error to knock in Kelli Costa who was on third before the inning was over. At the end of the first it was Sussex 2, Camden 1.
In the second, Sussex held the Cougars at 1. With two outs and bases loaded, Brook Goldsberry scored from Melissa Kanouse’s single. Kanouse was safe on first before the inning ended. Score was now Sussex 3, Camden 1. During the fourth, Kelli Costa scores for Sussex making it now Sussex 4, Camden 1.
Sussex again held the Camden Cougars at 1 and rallied in the fifth. Mary Hocking led off hitting a double along with Brianna Sherrier also getting a double due to errors. This placed Hocking on third who was able to score while Sherrier was tagged out at home. With bases loaded, Melissa Kanouse smacked a double bringing in three runs. Kanouse then stole third and also scored to making it 9-1. The game was then stopped due to the Mercy Rule – if after five complete innings and a team is ahead by least eight runs the game is stopped.
Head Coach Nick DeGennaro stated, “ A lot of different players stepped up today – it was nice to see some of those other players make plays for us.”
Final score was Sussex Skylanders 9 to Camden Cougars 1.
Team Record: Sussex Skylanders 19-10 and Camden Cougars 6-22
