New Jersey Pension Information for Adjunct Faculty
If you are an adjunct faculty member who is not currently enrolled in a public pension program through the New Jersey Division of Pensions, New Jersey law requires that you enroll in the Alternate Benefit Program pension immediately upon commencement of employment. The Alternate Benefit Program (ABP) is a defined contribution plan which requires the employee to contribute 5% of his/her gross earnings into the pension and the College to contribute 8% of the employee’s gross earnings. Vesting occurs after one year of employment. Upon enrollment in the ABP, the adjunct must also establish an individual account with one of the six providers approved by the NJ Division of Pensions and Benefits. Approved providers are: TIAA-CREF, Hartford, MetLife, ING, AIG Valic and AXA-Equitable. You can visit the website for the Division of Pensions (www.state.nj.us/treasury/pensions) for further information, including a member handbook for the ABP, a carrier comparison guide and a fact sheet on the ABP.
If you are a newly-hired adjunct who is already enrolled in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), you may elect to remain in PERS through your adjunct employment with SCCC (rather than be enrolled in the ABP), but you must complete election paperwork with Human Resources in order to do this.
Purchasing Medical Benefits as an Adjunct:
SCCC adjunct faculty who are members of a New Jersey State-administered pension system are eligible to enroll, at their own cost, in the State Health Benefit Program (SHBP) Direct 15 medical plan and the SHBP’s Prescription Drug Plan. Eligible adjunct faculty cannot enroll in prescription drug coverage unless they also enroll in the Direct 15 Plan.
The adjunct faculty member will pay the full cost of their coverage. The Division of Pensions and Benefits will bill enrolled employees on a monthly basis and payments must be made directly to the Division. The monthly cost of active coverage is as follows:
|Coverage||NJ Direct 15 Medical||Prescription Program|
|Member & Spouse/Partner||$1085.38||$321.75|
|Parent and Child||$675.34||$200.20|
Coverage will begin after a sixty day waiting period. ADJUNCTS WHO DO NOT ENROLL WHEN FIRST ELIGIBLE (EITHER THROUGH SCCC OR THROUGH ANOTHER PUBLIC EMPLOYER) CAN THEN ENROLL ONLY DURING THE REGULAR, ANNUAL OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD WHICH IS ANNOUNCED BY THE SHBP.
