Registration for Sussex County Community College’s (SCCC) annual Skylanders Sports Camp is now open. These day camps are designed to “create a team-building atmosphere while teaching and improving your child’s fundamental skills.” The camps are open to males and females between the ages of 8 to 14, with the option of participating in the basketball camp, the baseball camp, or both. Each camp is $145 and the day begins at 9 and ends at 3pm. There is a break at 11:30, and campers can either bring or buy their lunch from the cafeteria.

For boys, the basketball camp runs July 9-12 and the baseball camp runs from July 16-19. For girls, the basketball camp takes place July 23-26. The basketball camp is directed by Randy Jackson, head coach of the SCCC basketball team; the baseball camp is taught by Ramadan Mehmedi, SCCC assistant baseball coach. The camps focus on learning new individual skills, practicing them in a game setting, and learning teamwork all while having fun. Skylanders Sports Camp alumna, Miranda Savioli, comments, “The basketball camp was a lot of fun! I learned fun tricks and new techniques that I applied when the season resumed in the winter.”

For more information, please contact the SCCC Assistant Athletic Director, Mike Rath, at (973) 300-2751 or visit the camp website at sussex.edu/camps/.

Thursday, June 28 – Americana Roots & Folk

Vendors open at 6:00 PM
Concert begins at 6:30 PM

Headliner: Red Molly
Opening: Steve Kirkman and Fred Gillen, Jr. of Hope Machine

Michael Ruby’s review of the opening act, Steve Kirkman and Fred Gillen, Jr. of Hope Machine, says it all, “Folk music is a beautiful thing. Hudson Valley guitar slingers Steve Kirkman and Fred Gillen, Jr. of HOPE MACHINE grasp this fact in a fundamental way; they wrap their arms around it in a big bear hug. HOPE MACHINE began as a ‘friendly tribute’ to Woody Guthrie, but somewhere along the way it became something more. It became an extension of Woody’s ideas and attitude, with Kirkman and Gillen taking the wiry little wonder’s spirit forward into the now.”

From the Boston Globe to NPR, Red Molly has been nationally praised as earning their place among elite female trios. Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner, and Molly Venter fill performances with their “tick-tight” arrangements, crystalline vocals and caramel harmonies. Red Molly’s gorgeous a cappella ballads, bluegrass-tinged folk and touch of jazzy western swing, are all done up in Red Molly’s unique stylings of three-part harmonies, signature dobro licks and inventive arrangements that will have you tapping your feet and feeling your heart strings.

Sussex County Community College (SCCC) is proud to announce that Lauren Alger, a second year student at SCCC, has been named to the 2012 New Jersey All-State Academic Team on Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Day, May 3rd at the Trenton Marriot Hotel. New Jersey Council of Community Colleges President Dr. Lawrence Nespoli commented, “These students are recognized for their outstanding academic achievement and exceptional service to their communities as members of Phi Theta Kappa at their local community colleges.”

During her time at SCCC, Alger maintained a 4.0 GPA and served as President of the Student Government Association, Education, and Rotaract Clubs. She was also elected as an executive officer of Phi Theta Kappa and Pass-It-Along. She still found time to volunteer with Project Self-Sufficiency, a local day care center, and an elementary school. Previously, she was named on the PTK All USA Academic Team. Alger will be greatly missed by SCCC when she graduates later this month. She will transfer to Montclair State University in the fall and plans to become an elementary school teacher.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS RALLY TO HELP THE
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

WHAT:

The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) annual Relay For Life of Greater Sussex County will be held at Sussex County Community College on May 19-20. There is still time for teams to start forming and register. This year’s theme is “Rockin’ Relay.”

Relay For Life is a volunteer-driven, community event that allows participants from all walks of life – including cancer survivors, families, friends, corporations, civic organizations, schools, religious groups and concerned community members – to join together in the fight against cancer.

Relay is a celebration where individuals and teams camp out and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style. The event opens at 4:00 pm as cancer survivors lead the way around the track and are honored with a Survivor Lap and complimentary dinner reception. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaria candles around the track in a ceremony honoring cancer survivors as well as paying tribute to those lost to the disease.

For more information on how to get involved visit www.relayforlife.org/GreaterSussexCountyNJ or contact Jennifer Romer at Jennifer.romer@cancer.org. To learn more about the American Cancer Society or to get help, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.

WHY:
On any given week in Sussex County, 15 people will learn they have cancer and 5 people will lose their battle. They are our sisters…our parents…our neighbors and our kids. And until that number is zero, our fight must go on. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope in that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. Cancer doesn’t sleep and neither will we until we find the cure.
