On April 25th, 2012, Sussex County Community College (SCCC) graduated the College’s first Phlebotomy class. A phlebotomist must ensure quality and safety in the collection and transportation of patient specimens. Nine graduates received a certificate of completion, which marks their eligibility to take the AMT (American Medical Technologists) RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician) examination. Upon receiving this certificate, graduates had proven their ability to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and practice of a wide spectrum of medical terminology, precautions, and proper techniques. The Phlebotomy Technician Program requires a commitment of 170 hours, 60 of those being clinical practicum experience.

As an end of the year assignment, the students had to reflect on why they wanted to become a phlebotomist and what they gained from the courses. Some enjoyed being part of the healthcare profession; one wrote that now she can care for her two-year old son better, many gained patience, people skills, and respect for both the field and themselves.

Lisa Karas reflects, “I truly didn’t know what to expect, sticking people for blood, can I do this? Well the best way to answer that question is yes. Why? Because this is the first step of finding out why an individual is sick and what is actually going on inside their bodies. So when you look at phlebotomy in that perspective, sticking someone is extremely vital and the very first step in regaining their well-being.”

The following students received certification:
Melissa Clegg
Dee-Jae Gorcica
Nicole Rivera
Tara Both
Natasha Tejeda
Katherine LaBelle
Josephine Beattie
Lisa Karas
Judith Branick

For more information about the Phlebotomy Technician Program at SCCC, please contact Kathryn Quinn, program coordinator, at (973) 300-2279.

Dr. Dina Conde, Associate Professor of Biology at Sussex County Community College (SCCC), was published in the international science journal and web platform, Frontiers of Physiology. Frontiers is highly acclaimed for publishing only the “most outstanding discoveries across the entire research spectrum of Physiology.” Dr. Conde’s original research article, Neuroanatomical Correlate of Sensorimotor Recovery in Response to Repeated Vaginocervical Stimulation in Rats, was accepted on March 20th with publication on April 19th. Coauthored by Barry R. Komisaruk, the article serves as part of a research effort regarding treatment and recover of spinal cord injuries. Dr. Conde was chosen among a select group of scientists to share her research on the topic.

Dr. Conde’s expertise in the science fields garners her high respect as an associate professor at SCCC. One of her biology students writes, “Truly a great professor. [She] loves the subject, a difficult one and can communicate it. Show a little interest and she’s all over helping you.” Aside from teaching, Dr. Conde also serves as advisor to the Biology Club, which leads several community clean-up projects a year.

Sussex County Community College (SCCC) will be showing the documentary “Under Your Skin” in recognition of National Lyme’s Disease Awareness Month. “Under Your Skin” is a highly praised and award winning film that delves into “one of the most misunderstood and controversial illnesses of our time:” Lyme’s Disease. The movie addresses the difficultly to test for the illness, the resistant doctors and insurance companies have to diagnosing the disease, and the lives of those affected and/or taken by just one tick bite. “Under Your Skin” has been described as exposing and alarming, while remaining true to its original cause: seeking to educate and prevent new victims to Lyme’s disease. TVWorthWatching.com calls the film, “Very timely, as well as quite infuriating….Takes what seems to be a straightforward subject…and turns it into a detective story, a romance, an inspirational drama, a conspiracy thriller and a science lesson, all in one.”

The free showing will be held on Thursday, May 10th at 7:00pm in the PSE&G Student Center Theater. For more information of the movie, please visit underourskin.com.
