Shroud Encounter will be coming to Sussex County Community College (SCCC) on Wednesday, April 4th at 7:30 PM in the Performing Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

Shroud Encounter is a production of Shroud of Turin Education Project, Inc. and will be presented by international expert Russ Breault who has been featured on several documentaries airing on CBS and the History Channel. The presentation is a fast moving, big-screen experience using nearly 200 images covering all aspects of Shroud research.

The Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet still remains a mystery. Although the presence of specific pollen indicates the shroud originated in Israel, the 14-foot long linen cloth that has been in Turin, Italy for over 400 years and bears the faint front and back image of a 5’10″ bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the Bible. Twenty-four scientists concluded that the image was not produced by an artist as there is no trace of paint, pigment, or dyes. The image is so superficially imposed it is only present on the top micro-fibers- only the depth of a single bacterium and is not present underneath the blood, meaning the blood was present first. Millions believe this is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, but there is no proof of decomposition present. Dismissed in 1988 due to carbon dating indicating the cloth originated in medieval times, the cloth was brought back to the public eye in 2005 when a scientific journal published a report citing the labs violated sampling protocol, deeming their results inconclusive and invalid.

Shroud Encounter will cover all aspects of the history, science, art and theories of how the image may have been formed. For more information, please visit shroudencounter.com.

The Art Gallery at Sussex County Community College is currently featuring an exhibition of new paintings by Allan Gorman. The exhibit will run through February 24th.

The Montclair, New Jersey artist’s most recent collection of paintings explores the intersection between abstraction and realism. In these works, the artist marvels at his subjects, familiar machine-age objects. Expanding on his last series of what seemed like portraits celebrating industrial objects, Gorman has now chosen to bring us in for a closer, more abstract view. This change of perspective challenges us to go beyond the larger context and invites the viewer to focus on the precise details that Gorman finds so engaging. Carefully painted particulars of watch mechanisms, details of train or truck parts and heavy-duty machines allow us to notice the intricacies of parts and spaces around and between — and how they all combine to make up the larger whole.

Gorman work has been widely exhibited in the last few years, including the 2012 Mid Atlantic Painting Exhibition in Fredericksburg VA, and the NJ Arts Annual at the NJ State Museum in Trenton. He is represented by The Phoenix Gallery in NYC and by Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts in Binghamton, NY.

Below is a review of the exhibit from SCCC student Nadine Stevens.

An opening reception was held for the exhibit last month where Gorman greeted students, SCCC staff and faculty and members of the community. The artist was met with questions regarding his process and subject matter.

Gorman’s paintings were apparently developed by using under drawings created by photo projection which varied in detail and form. While only one piece in the gallery was done entirely freehand, it is a piece that confirms the skill and talent that Gorman possesses. Rigs and trucks are the primary focus of the collection, which blend the lines between abstract shapes such as circles and squares and real life objects like transportation. Awkward angles of underpasses create triangles in the sky and while some of the paintings, such as # 11 and #12 appeared stylistically simplistic, others such as “Red Reflections” are extremely detailed featuring carefully painted grills gleaming under sunlight. If Gorman has a specialty, it is painting the reflective surfaces of metal which is so exquisitely accomplished it might lead one to believe he is a watchmaker or metal worker. When questioned, Gorman shyly will admit these works of art are his least favorite … not because of the detail or process but rather the subject matter and purposes behind its creation. The artist seemingly struggles with “Daisy”, “Patek” and “15 Jewels” because unlike the other paintings in the gallery which were created for his own edification, the complicated watch pieces have been specifically created for sale. Most definitely worthy of possession, the three paintings come in beautiful black and gold embossed frames and appear to be the most doted on of the collection.

The students and staff of the college shared many opinions about the mind expanding works which evoked much conversation regarding the “mysterious machinery” with “harsh” or “bold” colors. A professor commented that he enjoyed the exhibit but was disturbed by what appeared to be a disconnection between the artist and the natural world. Comments such as “Bizarre” “Really cool” and “Whoa!” were also excitedly exchanged over Gorman’s works. While some of the audience had difficulty making sense of the pieces, others felt the works adequately exemplified the shapes which govern the mechanics of our highly technological ways of life. Students and faculty of SCCC urge the community to take time over the next few weeks to review the Gorman’s vision of the delicate mechanics which dictate time and transportation in our fast paced, moving world.
