Athletic Director, John Kuntz, came to Sussex County Community College in the fall of 1986 to start a men’s basketball program. SCCC was in its infancy as an institution at that time and did not sponsor any intercollegiate sports. The men’s basketball program began competing in January of 1987 with John as its head coach. John was hired full time at SCCC as the Athletic Director in August of 1988 and remained as the head men’s basketball coach through 2001. He incorporated the baseball program in 1989 which Kuntz also coached until 1993. The athletic program continued to grow to what SCCC sponsors today: men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The Skylanders joined the Garden State Athletic Conference (the state of New Jersey’s community college league) and the National Junior College Athletic Association in the fall of 1991. Numerous SCCC athletes have achieved NJCAA All American status as well as Academic All American status. John served as NJCAA Region XIX Men’s Director for 13 years and Garden State Athletic Conference President as well as holding numerous committee positons in both organizations and chaired the Division III NJCAA Basketball Committee. John was recognized by the NJCAA with the George E. Killian Award of Excellence in 2007 which is the highest Athletic Administrator Award presented by the NJCAA.
