Pharmacy Technician Program offered at SCCC

Article Posted -- February 1, 2018

Qualified Pharmacy Technicians are in high demand due to an increase in a pharmacist’s workload, the increasing demand the aging population is placing on the health care system, and the shortage of pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in general.

Those seeking to begin a career in this field, are urged to sign up for Skylands Professional Training (SPT) Pharmacy Technician Certification Program held at Sussex County Community College (SCCC). This 50-hour comprehensive course prepares students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. As a student in the program, you will develop hands-on Pharmacy Technician skills, while also learning to work as a member of a pharmacy team in a variety of settings.

Working under the direction of a registered pharmacist, Pharmacy Technicians’ main responsibility is the filling of prescriptions according to doctors’ orders.  Primary duties include screening prescription orders for accuracy, sorting medication by counting, measuring and weighing, understanding state laws related to the prescription drug industry and contacting insurance providers to find out details on a customer’s policy.  Depending upon the practice setting, a Pharmacy Technician may also be involved in the admixture of drugs for intravenous use.

The SPT program at SCCC will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) exam. Classes begin on February 27 and continue through April 24, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm.

For this program, students should have taken math and science in high school, strong basic math skills are important. A high school diploma or HSE (formerly GED) is required to sit for the PTCB exam. Anyone with a high school degree or HSE/GED must make an appointment for the Placement Test prior to completing registration.
