What do we do?

The learning process extends beyond your time in class. You may need tutors to help review concepts with you. You may need pointers to better use technology on campus. You may not have a computer of your own at home and simply need to do your homework. This is where you come.

We also realize that, along the path to a certificate or degree, obstacles may appear in the road. Our job is to help you navigate the obstacles, and where we can, help you to overcome them. We each come to this department with various areas of expertise. In addition to the help we ourselves can give you, we are experienced at helping you connect with various college-community and county-community support systems.

Why come here?

  1. You’re struggling getting your thoughts organized for your paper
    • Drop in for a group tutor session in WRITING – no forms to complete, no appointments needed. Just pick up a copy of the “Open Writing Tutoring Schedule” in the Learning Center, or call us to ask when the next session is on. It’s FREE!

Learning Center Workshops

“WebCT 101”:
This is our newest workshop designed to support students in WebCT technology. WebCT is used by many professors on this campus as a mechanism for disseminating assignments/information to their students. Using your computer and WebCT, you would log on to a specific site for your instructor, gather and complete assignments, and then e-mail them back to your instructor.

You may feel intimidated if you have no experience with the technology. In order to make you feel more comfortable with this system, we will be running day and evening training sessions the second and third weeks of the semester. We will run it again sometime after mid-term exams. This informative workshop will be run by Keith Williams, Instructional Technologist at SCCC. Come to the Learning Center to pick up a copy of the flyer, or ask your instructor for more information. You can also check out the banner on the home page of the SCCC website.

Coming Soon:

  1. We are currently trying to recruit students to work in the Learning Center as Student Technologist. You would get PAID to do this.
    • Are you a computer major?
    • Are your grades very good?
    • Are you a “people person” first, “computer wiz” second?
    • Are you currently receiving Financial Aid at this institution?

    • If the answer to all these questions is “YES”, please contact Kathleen Okay, Director of the Learning Center, at 973-300-2153 as soon as possible!!

Suggestions?

  • Do you have any ideas on how we can better serve your needs, let us know!
  • Do you have additional ideas for workshop subjects, let us know!
  • Are you a student who excels in a particular subject matter? Would you like to be paid as a peer tutor? Ask us how!
