Use 2 white rods, 2 red rods, and 2 light green rods. Use all 6 rods to create a plot. Place the rods on grid paper so that all the edges of your shape touch the grid lines, every rod touches at least one centimeter of another rod and the rods do not fence in any open spaces.
Trace around the outside of the plot to record it. Find the area of your plot by counting the squares inside the outline.
Find the perimeter of your plot, or the length of the path needed to go all the way around it, by counting the units along the outline.
Use the same 6 rods to build more plots with different shapes. Record each plot and find its area and perimeter.
Be prepared to discuss what you notice about the areas and perimeters of your plots.
