TUTORING

Did you know that you can receive tutoring through the SCCC Learning Center for most academic courses? SCCC students can request information on tutoring for courses they are currently registered in.

Did you know it's FREE?

GROUP TUTORING:

  • No forms to complete
  • No weekly commitment of your time
  • Unlimited access to sessions with a tutor throughout the week
  • No need to call if you can't make it

Sound appealing? Open, group-format tutoring is available to assist students in all developmental and Level 100 English courses (English Composition I/ENGL 101, English Composition II/ENGL 102), academic ESL classes, Effective Speaking, Freshman & Graduation Seminar courses, and Math and Science courses. Effective Speaking students (ENGL 201) students should note that open COMS 110 labs are also available for help with power point. All you need to do is pick up the most current copy of the various labs and schedules in any of those subjects by either hitting the links on this page, or by dropping into the Learning Center, at your convenience, to pick up a schedule in person. Please note we will maked every effort to update the links in an expedient manner but we do suggest you call us to confirm a particular session to avoid making an unnecessary trip. We would love to hear from you!

Please note the schedule does change throughout the semester due to various issues. Always make sure you are working with the most recent copy.

Links for schedules:

  1. Open Math/Science Tutoring Schedule
  2. Open Writing Tutoring Schedule

When you attend one of these sessions, you may be the only student present, or you may be one of several students present. The tutor will make every effort to work with everyone present throughout the session. Attend as many sessions as fit into your schedule. Supplement individual tutoring by attending as many open sessions as possible.

These sessions are taught by either current faculty or by one of our experienced tutors (often, they are both!)

INDIVIDUAL TUTORING:

Students in specific courses are eligible to fill out requests for individual tutoring. These would include Level 200 English courses (except ENGL 201 – see open session above), Foreign Language, Psychology (except PSYC 103 & PSYC 120 – see open writing lab), History, Sociology, Legal Studies, Education, Level 200 Computer courses, and Criminal Justice courses. Call us for information for other topics not listed. While we cannot offer any guarantees, we will make every effort possible to locate a qualified tutor for you. It is best to get your request to us as quickly as possible in case we need time to actively recruit new tutors.

Forms are available in the Learning Center. Information needed for the form includes a phone number you can be reached at quickly throughout the day, the times you're available (it is helpful to bring along a copy of your class schedule), the name of your professor, and all the possible days and times (nights & Saturday morning included) that you are available.

This is a weekly commitment. In other words, to be able to match you to a tutor we need to know that the session you commit to is good for the entire semester . This isn't to say it is etched in stone and can never be changed – of course things can and do change! What we are striving for is a reasonable expectation on your part that the session will work on a weekly basis.

If you need to cancel a session, you need to call us, up to an hour in advance, at 973-300-2150. If you call off hours and receive voice mail, please speak clearly and give your name and the name of your tutor, as well as the time you were scheduled to come in. The hour lead time gives us the opportunity to reach the tutor and cancel the session. This works both ways. Tutors, too, are instructed to call the Learning Center if they are ill or cannot attend. That is why we ask for a phone number where you can be reached at quickly throughout the day. A cell-phone number is ideal.

We realize everyone's time is limited. If we call you to cancel the session, we will provide you with updated information on available group sessions that day, so that you still have the opportunity to receive help.

Please stop by, or call, for more information. Please note that individualized tutoring is not offered in Math or Science. Please refer to the Open Math/Science Tutoring schedule.

WORKSHOPS:

Please look for our helpful workshops throughout the semester in topics such as “WebCT 101”; “Math Anxiety”; “Using the TI-83 Graphing Calculator”; “Power Point”; “Writing Research Papers”; “Using the Scientific Calculator”, “Surviving On-Line Courses”; “MLA Format”; and “APA Format”. Fliers are posted throughout the campus with more detail, or call us at 973-300-2150 for more information. These are one-time sessions held on campus and usually run for an hour.

WEBSITES:

Still not enough help? Ask us for a list of websites we have gathered in the topics of Math and Writing. Each provides helpful tips and sample problems & solutions. Even if you are meeting with a tutor, these sites could provide a good review of concepts and possibly inspire specific questions for your tutor. Got insomnia – we're sure factoring equations will help get you to sleep faster than you think!!
