The library continues to adapt library instruction in response to library conditions and student needs. We hope to improve the efficiency of our service and offer more sophisticated instruction to upper-level students.
We hope to offer basic library instruction judiciously. Often these classes are offered to Freshman Seminar and Composition I students before the students have topics for research. Students cannot get the full benefit of these classes without a frame of reference.

We have developed information literacy assignments that can be done as a class or assigned as homework.
We plan to build an increased commitment and patron base for library consultations, allowing us to work individually and intensively with students who have assignments.
We are developing library instruction modules for distance learning students. These modules are also available to any student who needs direction in using remote access resources.
We are willing to go to Freshman Seminar and Comp I classes to discuss our role as consultants and to establish ourselves as a presence in the students’ college life.
We will continue to offer supervised library research sessions. These classes allow students who have assignments and paper topics to learn the research process as they work, making our instruction more relevant.
We will of course continue to offer basic library instruction classes to any instructor who wishes to offer them to their students.
We plan to increase the number of classes on special research topics and to teach research in specific disciplines. These classes use assigned research projects to demonstrate the research process. Students find these classes relevant to their assignments. We also use these classes to teach resources and research skills in specific areas of study. Students who have decided on a major will need this information not only at Sussex but in four-year colleges as well.
We plan to continue offering instructional opportunities to the college community. In addition to open research sessions, we hope to offer classes on topics such as Internet use, consumer health research, Reference USA and business research and genealogy.
