Sand Hill Band of Indians Presentation by Dr. Sam Beeler at SCCC

On Thursday November 13th at 10:50 a.m. the Office of Student Activities at Sussex County Community College will offer an educational program about the Sand Hill Band of Indians. Dr. Sam Beeler will present the program in the College Theater. The community is invited to attend this free presentation.

Photo - Sam Beeler Chairman of the New Jersey Indian Office and a Bird Clan-KeetoowahSam Beeler, Ph.D. is Chairman of the New Jersey Indian Office and a Bird Clan-Keetoowah (ultra conservative Cherokee), tribal elder of the Sand Hill Band of Indians in New Jersey. Dr. Beeler is an active member of the Keetoowah Society and has participated in traditional ceremonial stomp grounds at Stokes in New Jersey and Stokes Stomp Ground in Oklahoma.

Dr. Beeler is a Native New Jersey Indian raised by full blood traditionalists and has practiced the ancient Keetoowah beliefs since childhood. By the 1800’s, the Keetoowah Society had become what amounted to an underground religion to protect themselves against the unpredictable actions of the Federal Government.

The Sand Hill Band of Indians, Cherokee/Lenape-Delaware, have a history in New Jersey dating back to the 1800’s and Cherokee Indians have a documented presence in New Jersey dating to 1711.
