Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with the Mel Brooks classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly “boffo” hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. THE PRODUCERS skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!”

The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show, hiring a director, and raising the money is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.

This musical requires an eclectic ensemble cast of different ages. Auditions are open to the SCCC Community and to the General Public. There are roles suited for performers 16 – 80 years old. All actors are welcome from the novice to the experienced. “We look forward to encouraging young and mature people who want a first chance at acting in a musical or who wish to return to the stage in this hysterical musical that will make its premiere in Sussex County at the Performing Arts Center at Sussex County Community College” said director Stella Trikouros. Rehearsals will generally be held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

All performers who audition should come with a photograph of themselves for I.D. purposes only.  A small color or B&W print or computer printout will be fine. Photographs will not be returned. Everyone should bring comfortable clothing and shoes to participate in basic movement.

Everyone should come prepared to sing 2 minutes of a song of your choice, A cappella or with a CD. A monologue is not necessary but will be heard if it is less than 45 seconds.  You will also be asked to read from the script, be given improvisations to do and a short dance routine to perform in a group. Vocal auditions will be held in small groups while the others are waiting in the lobby. “Auditioning is stressful, so I like to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible” said director Trikouros. It is essential to come to as many audition dates as you can because director Trikouros, musical director Phil Lid, and the choreographer will have more opportunities to see your potential.
