Job Description

Sussex County Community College is in immediate need to hire a qualified applicant to teach one section of Western Civilization I and two sections of Western Civilization II on Tuesdays and Thursdays in-person in class on the Newton Campus.

The Western Civilization I course is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:40 to 2:55 pm. This course emphasizes the political, social, economic, technological, and cultural forces that influenced the historical development of Western Civilization to 1648. Major topics include Ancient Civilizations, Greece and Rome, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation.

The Western Civilization II courses are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays one from 10:50 am to 12:05 pm and the second from 12:15 to 1:30 pm. This course is a survey of Western Civilization since 1648 with emphasis on the concepts and historical movements vital to understanding the modern world. Major topics include the development of law and government, the emergence of the major ideologies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the industrial revolution and economic modernization, 20th century “isms” and the impact of social and cultural development in Western Europe.

Required Education/Experience by Discipline

  • Master’s degree in history with a focus on Western Civilization.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills needed.
  • At least two years teaching experience at the college level.
  • Strong technical skills especially with Canvas Leaning Management System or similar learning management systems.
