Job Description

The Head Custodian assists the Director of Campus Safety, Security and Campus Operations in the functional and operational aspects of facilities management, including troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. He/She also assists in the daily supervision of assigned staff, including scheduling, review and follow-up of work schedules and completed assignments.


Main Duties:


Determines the program of work and its schedule of completion so as to ensure a clean and neat appearance of College buildings, grounds and other college owned facilities, such as the Public Safety Training Academy.

On a daily basis, ensures that operations checks are performed on the boilers in each building. Make necessary repairs to the boiler systems as appropriate or assign function to other staff or call in an outside contractor when necessary and approved.

Arrange the work schedules of any and all three shifts to ensure proper coverage.

Coordinate vacation coverage schedules to ensure adequate coverage.

Monitor the inventory of maintenance related items and supplies and replaces as necessary.

Participates in the decision making process for hiring, evaluation and terminating departmental employees.

Under the direction of the Director of Campus Safety, Security and Campus Operations, receives, processes and prioritizes requests for work orders. Schedules the sequence in which requested work is done and assigns necessary staff.

Assists the Director of Campus Safety, Security and Campus Operations in coordinating with officials for necessary on campus inspections, including the Fire Department, Board of Health, elevator inspections and boiler inspections. Responsible for ensuring that all necessary repairs are made either in house or by outside contractors.

Supervises the daily work performance of the Maintenance Department staff.

Tests the fire alarm system on a regular basis to ensure proper operation.

Assists in campus emergencies as a responder, prescribed in the campus-wide Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).

Performs other duties as assigned.



  • High School graduate or equivalent.


Essential Skills:

  • Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, equipment and materials of custodial functions.


Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated supervisory ability within a custodial/maintenance department.
  • Black Seal License preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license
