Job Description

The Part-Time Writing Center Coordinator develops an exemplary student support service that provides all students an opportunity to build on their writing skills to achieve success in the formal academic writing requirements for all disciplines. This individual will support the Writing Center in-person and in accordance with the academic calendar to include the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

Support the mission of the college.

Embraces a deep appreciation, understanding, tolerance, and commitment to free speech and diversity within an academic organization.

  •  

Develop a mission statement and vision for the Writing Center

  •  

Convene an Advisory Board consisting of both internal and external stakeholders a minimum of once a year.  

  •  

Collaborate with the English Department Writing Center Liaison to ensure the Writing Center is meeting the needs of the College.

  •  

Create a budget for the Writing Center that meets the needs of the faculty and students.

  •  

Publicize the Writing Center through working with faculty from all departments and student support areas.

  •  

Manage regular in person and year-round hours including day and evening hours. 

  •  

Work with faculty from all departments to develop writing instruction for students and writing across the curriculum.

  •  

Hire peer writing coaches by posting ads, reviewing qualifications, interviewing and working with the SCCC Human Resources Department.

  •  

Oversee peer writing coaches including initial and continuous training, organizing work schedules and conducting periodic evaluations.

  •  

 Provide individualized and small group instruction to all students.

  •  

Keep records for students, faculty, and administrators.

  •  

Complete purchasing requisitions for the Writing Center.

  •  

Complete annual assessments of the Writing Center.

 

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition or its equivalent

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Experience in teaching composition and rhetoric
  • Knowledge of Writing Center pedagogy
  • Knowledge of theories of learning
  • Knowledge of research methods
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods
  • Experience in developing and evaluating materials
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the use of technology.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Detail oriented.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Previous experience in higher education and working in a Writing Center.
