Job Description

This is a 12-month administrative and teaching position. This instructor must have a strong, demonstrated background and expertise in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Service, along with management and operations experience, and potential to inspire a collegial atmosphere.  The qualified candidate will be responsible for teaching lecture and laboratory courses and performing related duties in kitchen laboratory management. The ideal candidate will be able to teach across the Department’s curriculum (basic culinary skills through advanced culinary courses), and specialize in food & beverage operations, particularly restaurant service. Essential to the success of this position includes the following: meeting the best outcomes for students in pedagogy teaching in all course modalities, the development, support and implementation of Culinary & Hospitality curricula, on-going curriculum development, class assessment, professional development, application of the college/departmental strategic plan, service to the college, community outreach, student advisement and retention and the ability to take leadership roles when assigned.

This candidate should expect to teach 12+ credits per semester based on institutional needs.  

Expectations, Skills, Abilities, Dispositions:

  1. Intentionally focuses on leading and developing a culture of educational excellence at the college.
  2. Provide strong recruitment and retention efforts to attract new students into the Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts and Hotel & Restaurant Management programs.
  3. Support the mission of the college and the department.
  4. Create a dynamic teaching and learning environment for the students that embraces innovation and scholarly reflection.
  5. Contribute to departmental budget development and assist the Program Supervisor in implementation.
  6. Support department operations, department expansion, and collaboration within the department as well as with cross-departmental initiatives.
  7. Make recommendations to the Program Supervisor regarding curriculum development and textbook selection and ordering. Update the curriculum within the discipline specialty to reflect changes in academia and the industry.
  8. Participate in the assessment of programs/certificates in the discipline.
  9. Assist in overseeing the Culinary lnstitute’s retail & community operations, including nights/weekends.
  10. Provide support and oversight to the student club, Epicurean Society.
  11. Serve on college committees, including those connected to the college governance process.
  12. Provide academic advisement for an assigned cohort of students.
  13. Possess a proven record of scholarship/creative activity, teaching, service activities, and achievements. Has a desire to engage in scholarly pursuits and professional development.
  14. Network with community partners to secure support for the program & opportunities for students.
  15. Ability and willingness to work with administration and other departments on academic and accreditation matters.
  16. Identifies and implements strategies to recruit students by creating ties and practices with community businesses, organizations, faith-based institutions, workforce-related organizations and similar entities in the county and surrounding areas.
  17. Ability to communicate with supervisors/students/colleagues, including demonstration of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  18. Participates in all open house and similar celebratory events, including commencement.
  19. Maintains a collegial and respectful demeanor with peers, students, and patrons associated with Arbor Restaurant & all associated Culinary Programs.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • A Culinary Art degree and/or B.A. in Food & Beverage Management
  • Experience in academic instruction within Culinary Art/Hospitality at an institution of higher education is preferred.

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to work with a broad spectrum of students found in a community college environment, emphasizing student mentorship and retention.
  • Is a recognized and credentialed content expert in the field of Culinary Arts/Food & Beverage Management/Hospitality, with sufficient experience and knowledge to teach in these areas and to provide leadership.
  • A deep appreciation, understanding, tolerance, and commitment to free speech and diversity in an academic organization.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment concerning College policies and procedures.
  • Proven record of scholarship/creative activity, teaching, service activities and achievements, and a desire to continue this record of achievement.
  • A desire and aptitude to remain current in the latest evolutions in the industry.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Chef and/or Food & Beverage Manager with a focus in operations of at least 5 years.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift 35# comfortably.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the use of POS/Reservations technology.
  • Teach day and evening classes including online/hybrid classes with demonstrated effectiveness utilizing the College's Canvas Learning Management System

  • Physical Requirements: This position requires in-person presence on campus, at regional and state-wide meetings, and at various locations throughout the county and surrounding areas in order to carry out duties.

Salary:  $55,000 per year
