Job Description

Provides advisement to students, including international students for entry into a program of study. This individual maintains, updates, and monitors all records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information (SEVIS) system.

Performs generalist advising functions, including admission and registration, academic advising, transfer counseling as well as provides general college information for the general student population.

  1. Maintains status as a Designated School Official (DSO) in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information (SEVIS) system.
  2. Sets up SEVIS records for F and M nonimmigrant students admitted to one of the school's programs of study.
  3. Activates SEVIS records for non-immigrant students who register for a program of study at the school.
  4. Maintains SEVIS records for the duration of a student's enrollment at the school, any optional practical training, and the grace period before the student departs.
  5. Approves or requests approval for student benefits, such as Employment or Reduced course load, Reinstatement of F or M nonimmigrant status, Extension of stay in the United States.
  6. Releases SEVIS records to a new school when a student transfers.
  7. Completes student SEVIS records when students finish their program of study and leave the country.
  8. Terminates student SEVIS records when students fail to maintain nonimmigrant status.
  9. Understands and applies applicable regulations in the administration of their programs.
  10. Establishes institutional procedures to ensure institutional compliance with record keeping, retention, and reporting requirements.
  11. Provides students with information needed to make informed decisions regarding maintaining nonimmigrant student status DSOs are responsible for recording and reporting on these activities.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Essential Skills:

  • Advising experience in a Higher Education environment.
  • Familiarity with student services and higher education, including policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources and support services.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students.
  • Ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the College.
  • Ability to identify students' needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals.

Salary:  $18.00 per hour
