Job Description

The Writing Center Coordinator, a grant-funded position, develops exemplary academic support service that provide all students an opportunity to build on their writing skills to achieve success in the formal academic writing requirements for all disciplines. This individual will supervise the Writing Center on campus, including any student workers or staff as assigned, providing services to students throughout the academic year, including during the summer.  This individual also oversees study-hall services for various student populations.    

  1. Focuses on fostering a culture of “caring regard” at the college.
  2. Support the mission of the college.
  3. Embraces a deep appreciation, understanding, tolerance, and commitment to free speech and diversity within an academic organization.
  4. Develops a mission statement and vision for the Writing Center.
  5. 5. Works with the Assistant Dean of Academic Learning Resources to support broader learning initiatives.
  6. Works with SEG (Student Enrollment Group) to determine and create focused student presentations as part of the Lunch & Learn initiative, including but not limited to topics such as AI, plagiarism, and various citation approaches (APA, MLA, etc.)
  7. Convenes an Advisory Board consisting of both internal and external stakeholders a minimum of once a year.
  8. Collaborates with the English Department Writing Center Liaison to ensure the Writing Center is meeting the needs of the College.
  9. Creates and monitor a budget for the Writing Center that meets the needs of the faculty and students.
  10. Publicizes the Writing Center through working with faculty from all departments and student support areas.
  11. Manages regular in person and year-round hours including day and evening hours.
  12. Works with faculty from all departments to develop writing instruction for students and writing across the curriculum.
  13. Hires and develops peer-writing coaches by posting ads, reviewing qualifications, interviewing and working with the SCCC Human Resources Department.
  14. Oversees peer-writing coaches including initial and continuous training, organizing work schedules and conducting periodic evaluations.
  15. Provide individualized and small group instruction to all students.
  16. Keep records for students, faculty, and administrators.
  17. Participates in various recruitment and retention initiatives and events, including College Open House, Meet the Clubs events, New Student Orientation events and recruitment endeavors.
  18. Participates in a variety of committees and Advisory groups.
  19. Works with different student populations to develop study hall and provide resources unique to different groups.
  20. Utilizes data to guide interventions and monitors effectiveness to support student retention.
  21. Complete purchasing requisitions for the Writing Center.
  22. Complete annual assessments of the Writing Center.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition or its equivalent

Essential Skills:

  • Experience in teaching composition and rhetoric at a higher education level
  • Knowledge of Writing Center pedagogy
  • Knowledge of theories of learning
  • Knowledge of research methods
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods
  • Experience in developing and evaluating materials
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the use of technology
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Detail oriented.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in working in a Writing Center or a tutoring center for developing writing skills preferred. 

Salary:  $41,000 per year
