Students enrolled in criminal justice classes at Sussex County Community College (SCCC) have the opportunity to learn from a professor who brings extensive experience and passion to the classroom.

Dawn Flanders joined SCCC last fall and has been an assistant professor in the Criminal Justice program. With four years of teaching experience at institutions such as Seton Hall University, Raritan Valley Community College, and Middlesex College, she brings a wealth of academic knowledge to SCCC.

Before transitioning into higher education, Flanders had a distinguished 25-year career in law enforcement. During her tenure, she specialized in community policing, served as a school resource officer, and focused on initiatives to prevent drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, violence, and gang involvement.

"First-hand knowledge and experience with the criminal justice system inspired me to continue in academia," says Flanders, assistant professor of Criminal Justice.

As a former community college student herself, Flanders has a unique understanding of her students' journeys.

"What I like most is the feeling of full-circle education since I graduated from Ocean County College," shares Flanders. "I can relate to the challenges students face and understand how important this educational step is for them.”

Flanders appreciates the diverse student body at SCCC and the smaller class sizes, which allow for more personalized instruction.

"I like the diversity among students, which brings many angles into class discussions," she notes. "I enjoy helping students at the beginning of their higher education journey and getting them excited about their criminal justice interests. Their growth and success are what drives me."

Reflecting on her career transition, Flanders credits her time as a school resource officer and juvenile detective, solidifying her interest in education.

"My work in prevention and outreach, particularly mentoring students, inspired me to pursue teaching full-time," she explains.

Flanders sees her role at SCCC as an opportunity to give back to the community while preparing the next generation of criminal justice professionals.

"As a professor, I combine practical experience with academic theory to give my students a well-rounded perspective and prepare them for real-world challenges," she says.

Outside the classroom, Flanders actively advises the Criminal Justice Club, emphasizing the importance of student leadership.

"I'm here to support and facilitate them," says Flanders. "The club provides hands-on learning opportunities through community service projects, guest speakers, field trips, and networking events. It’s all about career development."

Flanders is proud to see the club thriving and is confident it will help students on their educational and professional journeys.

"My goal is to ensure criminal justice majors at SCCC have the ultimate experience," says Flanders. "That means excellent resumé-building opportunities and standout experiences to make them competitive for jobs in the field.”
