Sussex County Community College's longtime Athletic Director, John Kuntz, is well known throughout the region as an excellent administrator. His efforts go beyond Sussex County though, and at the recent 2019 NJCAA Fall Meeting held in Mt. Airy, Pennsylvania, Kuntz was recognized by college administrators from New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Delaware as the Ron Case Athletic Director of the Year.

Kuntz, who has been at Sussex since 1987, starting as the men's basketball coach, had no idea he was going to receive the award.

"It was quite a surprise," he said. "When they handed it out that's when I found out. It was an honor to receive this award which is voted on by one’s peers. It was certainly much appreciated."

The award is given annually to an Athletic Director in recognition of their commitment and positive contributions to athletics.

It was Ron Case himself who presented the award to Kuntz. Case, the former AD at Gloucester Community College, was the Women’s Region Director at the same time that Kuntz was the Men’s Region Director.

"We are so proud of our very own John Kuntz," said Kathleen Okay, Ed.D., Vice President of Student Services. "As we all know, John embodies a rare form of perseverance that allows him to effect change in a consistently collaborative and harmonious manner.  We are so fortunate to have someone of his caliber handle lead all the initiatives that he does.  It comes as no surprise to anyone on this campus that he would be recognized by his peers and celebrated with their highest of accolades."

In 1988 Kuntz became the baseball coach, in addition to his duties as a basketball coach, and also became the full-time athletic director. As part of his new job, he also oversaw Student Activities, Student Government Association, and campus clubs.

Kuntz has had many successes as the AD. He lists his top 3 achievements as, 1, Starting the Athletic Program; 2,  Watching the growth of the department from one team to the current 8 teams, and 3, The improvement of the athletic facilities.

"We still have a ways to go but we've also come a long way," said Kuntz.

It's been a good run for Kuntz, with no end in sight.

"My tenure at SCCC has been remarkable, in seeing the transformation and growth of so many areas of the college have been impressive and not just in athletics," he said. "Our current President, Dr. (Jon) Connolly has been extremely supportive of the athletic program and that is a huge help to me in leading our department and student-athletes.  I have also been fortunate to be able to surround myself with excellent, committed and dedicated coaches and staff who always go the extra mile and that is greatly appreciated. This award is as much about them as it is about me."
