SCCC’s Public Safety Training Academy Holds Graduation

1/13/2025 12:00:00 PM

– Sussex County Community College’s Public Safety Training Academy (PSTA) recently celebrated its annual Graduation at a packed house of guests, honoring 92 Firefighter, Rescue Task Force, and Fire Officer Development program graduates. These graduates will be vital in supporting volunteer fire companies across Sussex County.

The event, hosted by PSTA Director John Dixon as Master of Ceremonies, welcomed over 300 attendees, including firefighters, family members, and friends, to commemorate this significant milestone.

The Ogdensburg Fire Department served as the Honor Guard for the event, and live music was provided by the Bergen County Firefighter’s Pipe and Drums. Sky Sobieski, an SCCC Theater Arts student, performed the National Anthem, adding a heartfelt touch to the ceremony.

Distinguished speakers included SCCC President Dr. Jon Connolly, who delivered a warm welcome, and retired Deputy Chief Steve Prziborowski, who gave an inspiring keynote address. VIP attendees included Matthew Avenatti, SCSO Undersheriff; Virgil Rome, Sussex County Fire Marshal; Parker Space, NJ State Senator; SCCC Board members; and Sussex County Board of Commissioners.

Dr. Connolly reflected on the event's significance: “So many graduates, family members, friends, and instructors have dedicated their energy, effort, time, and commitment to this program. "Volunteer firefighting exemplifies the true spirit of volunteerism and service. It is one of this nation's last strongholds of genuine volunteerism, demanding exceptional skill, unwavering courage, and a readiness to face profound risks.

He expressed his gratitude to John Dixon for his impactful leadership at the Public Safety Training Academy and acknowledged the example he sets through his guidance and instruction.

Keynote Speaker Steve Prziborowski emphasized the theme of service in his address.

“Service above self is about the firefighters, who are all leaders, carrying the responsibilities that come with accepting the badge, regardless of rank,” said Steve Prziborowski, retired Deputy Chief.

Sussex County Community College and the Public Safety Training Academy take great pride in celebrating the graduates and the dedicated firefighters of Sussex County.

The PSTA continues to expand its course offerings, programs, and services to support local law enforcement, firefighters, EMS personnel, and the community. For more information, visit sussex.edu/psta.
