Men's and Women's Soccer become Region XIX CHAMPS!

10/30/2019 9:34:51 AM

On Saturday, our men’s and women’s soccer teams won Region XIX Championships. The first time in the College's history that two teams won the Region XIX on the same day.

The women traveled to Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and bested Essex CC, Newark, NJ 2-0 for the Women’s Region XIX Div I Championship. SCCC’s Carina Gasparini was named Offensive Player of the Game as the Skylanders came out firing and scored two goals in the first half, then the Ladie's defense took over and kept Essex out of the net for the remainder of the game. SCCC’s Milla Jowett took home the Defensive Player of the Game.

What a day for the Women Skylanders as they now move on to the NJCAA District Tournament this weekend in Maryland for a shot at a berth in the National Tournament. The women will play on Friday, November 5, at 4 pm vs. host CC Baltimore County - Essex, MD, on their home turf. CCBC comes in with a record of 18-1, but we know our team will not back down as they enter this game with a 14-1 record. The winner will play on Saturday vs. either Monroe, NY (the #1 ranked team in the country), or Frederick CC for a berth in the NJCAA Div I National Tournament in Melbourne, FL.

To make Saturday an even better day, our men captured their Region XIX Championship, beating Ocean 3-0 on their home field in Toms River, NJ. The men took an early lead, and, like the women, the defense came on strong. SCCC’s Kieran Ouellette was Named Offensive Player of the Game as he had a goal and an assist. SCCC’s Ulisses Rodrigues was named Defensive Player of the Game, leading the charge in shutting out Ocean.

The men now receive an automatic bid into the NJCAA Div III National Tournament in Herkimer, NY November 14-17. This is the men’s second trip in consecutive years to Herkimer for the National Tournament and now have won back-to-back Region XIX Men’s Soccer Championships, another first in SCCC athletic history.

Congratulations to all the Skylanders players, Coaches Frank Vernacchio and Mike Rath, and their staff for winning the Championship. The journey continues for our women and men.
