Help support our student athletes

The athletic program at Sussex County Community College is looking for some MVPs to assist the growing department—and its student-athletes—through “The Sky’s the Limit” Fundraising campaign.

The College is inviting alumni, families, and the public to become a Skylanders’ Athletics Club member to address some of the athletic department’s most critical needs. Some of the department needs include athletic scholarships, facilities upgrades, and the purchase of training equipment.

The Skylanders’ Athletic program began in 1987 but has seen an astonishing 130% growth in the past three years. The department now includes 230 student-athletes across ten athletic programs, including football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, wrestling, and Esports. Women’s volleyball will be added to the roster later this year.

Of those students, almost a third rely on financial aid and scholarships.

“Our Skylanders are a talented, passionate group who show excellence not only on the field but in the classroom,” said Athletic Director John Kuntz, pointing out that Sussex student-athletes have a higher average cumulative GPA than their non-athlete counterparts.

For many students, like alumna softball player Madison Stires, being able to play sports made all the difference in their college career: “My experience at Sussex made it difficult to leave after just two years. Sussex allowed me to continue to play the game I love and, while doing so, I made friends and memories that I will keep forever.” Stires is currently at Centenary University in Hackettstown on an academic scholarship where she is majoring in business administration and accounting.
