Sussex County Community College will highlight artist Thomas Stollar with his exhibition, That’s Okay, an exploration with the medium of clay. His artwork will be on display at the SCCC Art Gallery from November 16 through December 21.

The work is understood as a conversation between maker and material. Thomas Stollar creates sculptures using clay as a primary medium. Coupled with artistic trends, as well as the influences of Stollar’s current residence in South Florida, the exhibition aims to fit comfortably somewhere between “creative and phony.”

He believes the artist’s job is to create sparkling new things that had never been seen or thought of before, a conversation between art, artists, people, and pop-culture. That art arises, not from thin air or the genius of the artist, but from the ideas of culture that are spread and are carried along, grow and change. While these ideas may not be entirely ‘new’, neither are they phony. The current cultural dialogue of ‘fake’ versus ‘authentic’ underpins the ideas behind the artwork.

Thomas Stollar is an assistant professor of ceramics at Florida Atlantic University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Sunderland, UK and an MFA from West Virginia University. Often expressed through a utilization of ceramics, the work investigates the ability of clay to capture the haptic experience. Thomas remarks, "These days my work most frequently includes searching for that most elusive of themes, wonder."
