During this two-part event, we will take a walk through the history of rock and roll as it unfolded in the United States, from the days before rock (pre-1955) to the beginning of the 1980s (and beyond if time permits). We will discuss how developments in the music business and in technology helped shape the ways in which styles developed while enjoying the exploration of the music and artists, emphasizing both the cultural context and the music itself.
A lifelong musician, Wendy Fullem has shared the rock and roll stage with members of KISS, the Ramones, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, and with music legends such as Junior Wells and Marvin Hamlisch. She is a working musician and plays in multiple rock, blues, swing, and punk bands.
Professor Fullem holds an MA in music business from Berklee College of Music, and is in the process of earning a PhD in music education. She teaches The History of Rock and Roll, and Foundations for Success at Sussex County Community College.

A five-part Introduction to Drawing class will be held emphasizing the development of observational drawing skills and hand-eye coordination. Basic drawing elements such as line, proportion, perspective, composition, texture, and the study of light and shade are investigated through various perceptual and conceptual approaches. Open to beginning students as well as those who want to refresh their skills before moving on to more advanced studio courses. Professor Michael Hughes is a practicing artist and member of the Fine Arts Faculty at SCCC.
Students are required to bring their own drawing supplies. Basic tools should include a large newsprint pad and a very basic drawing kit containing charcoal pencils, graphite drawing pencils, charcoal sticks and an eraser. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

One myth fueled the belief that the royal rulers of Egypt were gods. But what kind of gods would they be? That was the question asked for almost 2,000 years as kingdoms rose and fell and pharaohs had to decide just how to rule Ancient Egypt. Join historian and SCCC professor Dr. Robyn Izquierdo as she delves into the mystery and history of a culture that continues to fascinate!
Robyn has been teaching college history for over 30 years. Her degrees (BA in US History, MA in Ancient History, PhD in Western Theological History, and ABD in Academic Psychology) are a reflection of her love of all things history and of learning itself. She is the founder of The Learning Fix Online Education Center and SafeCircles, and volunteers for non-profits whenever she is able. She's won several teaching awards, and feels most comfortable in front of a classroom. She has overcome several difficult circumstances in her life and she uses the lessons learned from them to guide her goals in education and her work with students. She presents lectures at university, community and church groups, has written and published a variety of works, and most importantly has two fantastic children. The Learning Fix is part of her dream to use her love of learning and teaching to support and encourage others.

This FREE Certificate Program, Becoming a Community Journalist, is a course designed to teach journalism skills and design practices for anyone in greater Sussex County who wants to share stories and information about their communities. The 8-week course offers a hands-on exploration of how journalism works. You'll learn how to increase your understanding of local issues that are affecting you and your neighbors and how to write and report important stories with and for your communities.
Your instructor will be Prof. Cheryl Conway. Prof. Conway teaches Journalism I and II at SCCC and has decades of experience as a community newspaper and magazine editor and reporter. She is also the editor of SCCC’s College Hill newspaper.
The program’s administrator is Dr. Nancy Gallo, Director of the Center for Lifelong Learning at SCCC. Dr. Gallo began her writing career as a community journalist and features editor and received a New Jersey Press Association award for her work. She will also be an instructor teaching in the program. The Becoming a Community Journalist program is offered through grant support from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and input from the Journalism + Design program at the New School.
When registering for the course you can choose one of the following: 1.) IN PERSON COURSE or 2.) ONLINE VERSION OF COURSE.
You’ll leave this course with samples of articles you have written, with ideas for future stories and a Certificate of Participation! Participants will be connected to local news outlet staff and community media producers in the greater Sussex County area so as to have continuing opportunities to produce original journalism.

Online participants will complete the same course requirements as the in-person course, but will not be required to come to campus.

Children young and old are invited to attend the Theater Program’s and the Child Development and Education Program’s production of “Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairytale Fun” at Sussex County Community College. The show is geared for families and will be held at the college’s Student Center Theater in Building D, where children will experience a creation station, enjoy the show and meet and greet the fairytale characters. A snack will be provided. This fun experience runs approximately one hour.

She Kills Monsters is a drama-comedy play by Qui Nguyen that debuted in 2011. It tells the story of Agnes Evans, an average woman who loses her parents and little sister Tilly in a car accident. Having been very distant from her sister while she was alive, Agnes embarks on an adventure to get to know her sister better by playing a Dungeons & Dragons module that Tilly had written and discovers things she'd never imagined. The plot takes place in reality and in the imaginary game world; in the game world Agnes learns about Tilly's exploration of her sexuality and how she struggled with her sexuality in reality.

The College Novel for the 2023-2024 academic year is Gail Honeyman's novel Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Members of the community are invited to read the novel and join us on campus for a lecture and discussion focusing on the novel’s themes. The goal of the college novel is to create a lifelong learning and reading community and encourage reading for pleasure, critical thinking, global awareness, and multicultural understanding. Read on your own or gather a group of readers to discuss on your own and then come to campus for a fascinating look at the novel led by Dr. Mary Thompson, English professor at SCCC.

With the weight of the world on his shoulders after the death of FDR and the looming Cold War, President Harry S. Truman needed a place to relax and unwind from the immense pressures of his job. His aides suggested the Commandant’s Quarters at the Key West Naval Base in Key West, Florida.
Like so many of us who have been there, he quickly fell in love with the island and its casual lifestyle. But his trips were more than vacations—he and his staff used the time to both to work and relax.
So take a trip to Key West and the Little White House with Dr. Frey. Professor Frey was a guest speaker there three times, as well as a distinguished speaker at the Truman Presidential Library in Missouri. He is considered to be one of the foremost experts on the Truman presidency. Be prepared for some great inside stories about Truman and the men and women who worked closely with him.
