Sussex County Community College (SCCC) Visual and Performing Arts Department presents the 1945 Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, “Harvey” by Mary Chase and directed by Professor Allison Ognibene. Complementing the Fall production are two free cross-curricular events happening on campus.
"Harvey" is a play about Elwood P. Dowd, a perfect gentleman, who begins to introduce his best friend, Harvey, a 6-and-a-half-foot-tall invisible rabbit, around town. Elwood's embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, are determined to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A comedy of errors then ensues. "Harvey" will be performed at the SCCC Performing Arts Center, located at 1 College Hill Road, Newton, NJ 07860.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the College’s Psychology and Visual and Performing Arts Departments created two programs that will be held on Tuesday, October 28. The first event called “Hearing Someone into Existence: A Cross-Curricular Conversation Inspired by “Harvey”, will be held at the College’s Performing Arts Center from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. The program features a selected scene from the comedy, followed by a thought-provoking discussion moderated by Psychology Professor Rich Linden and Annette Hoffman, Ph.D., Coordinator/Family Support Specialist, Intensive Family Support Services (IFSS) Sussex Mental Health Association. Together, they will connect the play’s exploration of individual uniqueness and mental health to real-world conversations about neurodiversity, mental health, compassion, and resilience.
At 5 p.m., a student art exhibition opening and artist discussion entitled "Seeing the Invisible" will be held in the Atrium of the Performing Arts Center. Inspired by the Fall production of “Harvey,” the compelling showcase of student oil paintings explores the unseen and what is deeply felt. In "Seeing the Invisible," students present expressive grisaille works—painted solely in black and white—reflecting themes of nonconformity, individualism, imagination, kindness, and acceptance. Both October 28 events are free and open to the public.
