Placement Test

The Placement Test provides your advisor with the information necessary to register you based on your individual academic needs.

What is the Placement Test?

The College Placement Test assesses students' current ability levels in reading, writing and mathematics. Sussex County Community College requires all newly-admitted students to take the College Placement Test.

All first-time, full-time students are required to take the placement test after admission but before registering for classes or show proof of exemption.

The following Accuplacer sub-tests are given:  WritePlacer Essay, Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, Math Computation and Algebra.  Results are immediately generated at the completion of the test.

Make sure to bring your SCCC Student ID number and bring a valid photo ID to the test. You may re-take the Placement Test, (any or all sections) one time at a fee of $10 per section.

Who is exempt from taking the Placement Test?

Students may present recent SAT scores, ACT scores, approved Basic Skills test scores from another institution, or college-level English or Mathematics transfer grades of C or better to be waived from the Placement Testing requirement.

These scores waive the requirement for Reading/Writing Placement Tests:

  • 450 or higher in the new SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section (after March 2016)
  • 23 or higher in the ACT English section AND 23 or higher in the ACT Reading section

These scores waive the requirement for Math Placement Tests:

  • 500 or higher in the new SAT Math section
  • 23 or higher in the ACT Math section

SAT and ACT scores do not exempt students from placements into Intermediate Algebra (MATH040), Precalculus (MATH110), or Calculus (MATH112). Students must take the College Level Math Placement Exam (CLM) as a pre-requisite to qualify for these courses.

Additional Exemptions Include:

Placement test taken at another institution. Students must provide the Testing Center with a copy of their scores to be evaluated for any course requirement.  The following Accuplacer sub-tests are given at SCCC:  WritePlacer Essay, Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, Math Computation, and Algebra.  Students missing any of these sub-tests must take those sections at SCCC for placement purposes.  Students transferring from another college must adhere to SCCC placement policies.

  2. Transfer students who have completed English and/or college Algebra, with a grade of  “C” or higher in each subject. Please provide the Admissions Office with a transcript showing the required course work. Present this documentation to the Advising and Counseling Center and Registrar prior to registration.

  4. Students matriculated in a degree or certificate programs, which do not require a college-level mathematics course, must still complete remediation through basic mathematics if a deficiency is shown in that area.
  5. Students for whom English is not their native language do not take the Placement Test until after they complete the ESOL program.
