New Students

Thank you for choosing Sussex County Community College as the place to begin your education. We pride ourselves on giving you the individualized attention you need to be successful.

There are many degree and certificate programs to get your started on the right path to earn an associate degree or to enter the workforce. Check the list of programs we offer to see what suits your interests.

All new students should attend a SOAR Session. Our Advising and Counseling Center is here to guide you as you plan your academic goals for the semester and beyond. Make an appointment with one of our counselors and explore your options.

What's my next Step?

Step 1: Apply for Admissions

On the Application under Admissions Status please choose First-time Student. Once admitted, you will receive an Official Letter and Email of Acceptance which will include your Student ID Number.

Step 2: Take the College Placement Test

The College Placement Test (Accuplacer) will determine which classes are right for you. You will need your Student ID # to take the Placement Test. For questions, please call the Testing Center at 973-300-2242.

You do not need to take the Placement Test if you scored the following:

  • SAT and scored a 450 in Critical Reading and/or 500 in Math
  • ACT and scored a 23 in Math and/or a 23 in English
  • Submit your scores to jfliegel@sussex.edu

Step 3: Apply for Financial Aid

Visit www.fafsa.gov to apply. The Sussex School Code is 025688. Once you complete the FAFSA and register for classes, call the Financial Aid Office at 973-300-2225 to determine your aid status.

Student Orientation, Advising and Registration logoStep 4: Attend a SOAR Session or Seek Advisement

  • Students who are registering for the Fall Semester should attend a SOAR Session (Student Orientation, Advising & Registration)
  • Students will register for their first semester classes during a SOAR Session.
Please note: Placement Testing or proof of SAT scores is needed BEFORE signing up for SOAR.
  • If you are registering for the Spring Semester or cannot attend a SOAR Session, seek advisement
Visit the Advising and Counseling Center to review your Placement Test results (or exemption documents) then plan your academic goals and objectives. Appointments are recommended, or call 973.300.2207.

Step 5: Register for classes

Students who attend SOAR will register during their session. If you did not attend a SOAR Session, register for classes at the Advising and Counseling Center. It is important that you follow your Program Check Sheet or Academic Plan.

Step 6: Pay your tuition

The easiest way to make your tuition payment is online. Payments can also be made in person at the Bursar’s Office. Ease the burden and spread your tuition payments over several months with our Interest-free Payment Plan.

For questions, please email bursar@sussex.edu or call 973-300-2106/2114
