First Time New Students

Thank you for choosing Sussex County Community College as the place to begin your education. We pride ourselves on giving you the individualized attention you need to be successful.

There are many degrees and certificate programs to get you started on the right path to earn an associate degree or to enter the workforce. Check the list of programs we offer to see what suits your interests.

All new students should attend a SOAR Session. Our Advising and Counseling Center is here to guide you as you plan your academic goals for the semester and beyond. Follow the First time, New Student Steps to Enroll below.

Step 1: Apply for Admissions

On the Application under Admissions Status, please choose First-time student. Once your application is processed, you will be issued a student ID number. For questions contact Admissions, 973-300-2223.

Step 2: Seek Advisement and Registration

Visit the Advising and Counseling Center to discuss your academic plan and to register for classes. Located in the Administration Building (B), Room B206. See hours of operation.

If you meet ANY of the below criteria, be sure to bring this documentation with you when you visit the Center

  • A cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above
  • SAT - Scored a 450 in Critical Reading and/or 500 in Math
  • ACT - Scored a 23 in Math and/or a 23 in English
  • Transferring in with courses from another college showing proficiency
  • Accuplacer (Placement) Test Scores Range

If you do not meet any of the above criteria, you must book an appointment with an advisor to discuss your academic options.

Step 3: Apply for Financial Aid

Visit www.fafsa.gov to apply. The Sussex School Code is 025688. Once you complete your FAFSA and register for classes, contact the Financial Aid Office to determine the status of your aid, 973-300-2225.

Step 4: Pay your tuition

Tuition payments can be made online or in person. Pay-as-you-go Payment Plans are also available. Contact the Bursar’s Office,
bursar@sussex.edu, 973-300-2106.

Step 2: Determine your Path to Advisement and Registration

If you meet ANY of the below criteria, you are clear to attend a Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration Session where you will meet with an advisor and register.

  • A cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above
  • SAT - Scored a 450 in Critical Reading and/or 500 in Math
  • ACT - Scored a 23 in Math and/or a 23 in English
  • Transferring in with courses from another college showing proficiency
  • Accuplacer (Placement) Test Scores Range

If you DO NOT meet any of the above criteria, you are required to book an appointment with an advisor to discuss your academic options. Please choose New Student Academic Planning from the menu.

Step 3: Attend a SOAR Session and Register for Classes 

New students who attend a SOAR Session (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) will register for classes during their session. Contact the Advising and Counseling Center 973.300.2207.

Get Your Student Photo ID: Stop by the Reception Desk in the Administration Building (B) during regular hours to have your photograph taken and get your Student ID card. You must bring your student schedule as proof of enrollment.

Activate your Sussex Online Tools: Once you register, you will be issued a student email account and My Sussex login. Set up your student email immediately to receive important college-related information.
My Sussex is the online student portal which will give you easy access to your

  • schedule
  • grades
  • transcripts
  • financial aid and more
  • Attend New Student Orientation: Connect to our campus! Students are required to participate in the Fall/Spring Orientation that will help you begin your education at Sussex. This half-day event is filled with a motivational speaker, meeting new classmates and getting to know our campus! Don’t miss it!
